Extended definition
The GDPR banner asking for user consent before setting non-essential cookies (analytics, advertising). Standard since 2018.
Context and application
Correctly implemented cookie consent has 4 mandatory elements: 1) Banner visible before any non-essential cookie, 2) Explicit opt-in (NOT pre-checked), 3) Per-category granularity (user chooses analytics yes, advertising no), 4) Possibility to revoke consent anytime (footer link). In practice, over 80% of EU sites have incorrect implementation (banner type “Accept” only, without granular opt-in). Solutions: Cookieyes, OneTrust, Cookiebot, Iubenda — all offer free plan for sites under certain traffic volume.
In practice
poor implementation = annoying banner that ruins your experience. Good implementation = discreet banner that respects opt-out.
