Context and application

SGE was the experimental phase (Search Labs opt-in) between May 2023 and May 2024. At I/O 2024, Google relaunched as AI Overviews and opened it to all US users, with progressive expansion in 2024-2025 to all markets. For content writing: if you see articles talking about “SGE”, they’re written pre-2024 — the underlying info remains valid (generative AI mechanics), but specifics (how it appears in SERP, what tactics work) are obsolete. Update to “AI Overviews” in your own content for clarity.
