Context and application
LLMs are trained on massive web text corpus (up to a knowledge cutoff date) plus specific fine-tuning. In SEO context, important is: 1) what content was in training data (published pre-cutoff), 2) what external sources the LLM accesses at inference (some have active browsing/search — Perplexity, ChatGPT with search; others don’t — Claude default without MCP). To be cited, your content must either be in training data (published long ago, authoritative) or be crawlable in real time (indexed and fresh). That’s why classic SEO + GEO are complementary, not mutually exclusive.
